New York, November 21, 2024 – New York Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that low- and moderate-income New York residents can now purchase energy-efficient appliances at participating retailers and receive instant retail discounts. Through the state's new Appliance Upgrade Program, New York becomes the first state in the nation to offer appliance rebates directly at the point of sale, providing a customer-centric approach to transition from inefficient electric or fossil fuel-powered clothes dryers to clean, heat pump-powered alternatives and supporting necessary electrical upgrades. This initiative not only helps residents lower their energy costs but also reduces harmful emissions from homes and communities.
"New York is leveraging every available federal dollar to incentivize consumers to prioritize energy-efficient appliances, ensuring an equitable energy transition," said Governor Hochul. "The new rebates will help low- and moderate-income New Yorkers save energy and money while using modern technology to reduce carbon emissions."
This program is administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through the Inflation Reduction Act's (IRA) Home Energy Rebates (HER) program. New York State has received a total of $31.74 billion in federal funding, with $15.9 billion allocated for home energy efficiency rebates and $15.84 billion for home electrification and appliance rebates.
Eligible Residents Can Receive Substantial Subsidies
Under the Appliance Upgrade Program, households with incomes up to 150% of the State's Area Median Income (AMI) can apply for subsidies on a first-come, first-served basis to replace inefficient or broken clothes dryers with ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump clothes dryers. Additionally, eligible households may receive extra support for wiring and panel upgrades. These ENERGY STAR certified heat pump dryers use approximately 70% less energy compared to conventional dryers, helping to reduce long-term energy costs.
Eligible households can receive up to $840 in appliance purchase and installation incentives and may qualify for additional electrical upgrade grants of up to $2,500 to $4,000. Households with an AMI below 80% can receive combined incentives of up to $14,000. New York State plans to further expand the subsidy program in 2025 to cover more clean energy appliances and allow owners of multi-family buildings to apply for grants.
